Danish warship shadows captured vessel

An NYK multipurpose cargo vessel was captured by pirates on Sunday off the coast of Mombasa, Kenya.

The Japanese carrier reported that the 20,000dwt Izumi, operated by NYK-Hinode Line, sent several alarm signals to shipowner Fair Field Shipping in the early hours of 10 October.

Fair Field was unable to establish radio contact with the Panamanian flagged vessel.

The EU Navy Force, which patrols the region later said: “The Danish warship HDMS Esbern Snare of the NATO counter piracy force was dispatched to intercept and investigate.

“In the early hours of 11 October, the captain of the vessel made contact with the Danish warship, stating that pirates were in charge.” The ship was mainly loaded with steel products from Japan and had a crew of 20 Filipinos
