Barcoded drugs can ensure safety, boost exports: Khullar

The Commerce Secretary, Dr Rahul Khullar, feels that implementing track-and-trace barcoding technology in the pharmaceutical sector would boost exports and ensure quality.

"This is important to ensure that not only are drugs cheap, but (that they are) genuine," Dr Khullar said while addressing a conference-cum-exposition on Track and Trace Barcoding Technology for Pharmaceuticals, organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry here recently.

He pointed out that track-and-trace barcoding once implemented would make even ordinary buyers into "enforcers, where a customer could buy a drug, message the barcode on the pack to the manufacturer and instantly know if the drug is genuine".
